Not illustrated. 1883 Excerpt: ...rival was advancing. Nearly twenty years had passed away, and then came a sudden and severe blow; Mr. Lawson, the banker, died. At first Charles Roberts flattered himself, or tried to flatter himself, into the belief that this circumstance would not alter his own position, or affect his credit; that he should have equal facilities afforded him by Mr. Lawson's successor, whoever he might be. But he was grievously deceived. In fact, Mr. Lawson had no successor. His affairs were found to be in confusion; the bank was consequently closed; the banker's late residence was sold, and his executors demanded the immediate liquidation of all debts due to the bank. Charles Roberts' was inconveniently large. There was another bank in the town, and, in desperation, Mr. Roberts sought there the assistance he needed. It was refused, civilly, but firmly. "I can place security in your hands which will far more than cover the advances I immediately need," said the perplexed tradesman. The banker declined to enter upon the subject. "You have probably heard unfavourable reports about my circumstances," said the unhappy man; "I have more than sufficient to pay all my creditors; but my stock is large and my book-debts are heavy; and I need the support that you can give." "I have heard no reports, and I do not question your ability or solvency," said the banker. "You will help me, then?" urged Mr. Roberts again.
